interview you today
To start how are you this fine day? Has
your summer been relaxing and wonderful?
Thank you so much for hosting me! I
sincerely appreciate all the bloggers who take the time to interview authors.
It makes me feel very fancy. =)
I am the mother of two teenage daughters,
so relaxed isn’t really a level I ever achieve. BUT. We just returned from a
wonderful vacation to Disneyland and Universal Studios. I have now been to both
Wizarding World of Harry Potter parks, which makes my inner (okay outer) geek
exceedingly happy.
Why do you love writing?
It’s what I was born to do. I’ve tried giving
up. I’ve tried doing other things, and some of those things I was pretty good
at, but I don’t love anything like I love writing. I completely lose myself in
the words and nothing gives me more pleasure than manipulating the emotions of
others. I kid. I kid. But in a way it’s kind of true. I love being able to
craft a story so compelling that readers are in tears. A reader told me that
while reading Into the Dark she had nightmares, and I was thrilled.
I am a creative person. I’m an artist and
my medium is words. It’s my form of expression, and I love it with every fiber
of my being.
How do you pick the names for your
characters?
Naming characters is difficult. I do
searches. I look for names with meaning. But in the end, I go with what I like.
Funny, and horribly embarrassing story: Originally, Mercy’s name was Claire.
But somehow the name didn’t seem quite right, so I was looking for something
new. One day I was watching an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians and
in the episode Kim gets a cat and names it Mercy. I loved it! And I knew it was
my character’s name. (Thanks, Kim!)
What time of day do you prefer to write?
Morning, afternoon, evening, or night?
I prefer to write in the morning. I
am not a night person at all. Everyone calls me grandma because I can easily
fall asleep by 8:30.
What do you do when you feel like you've
hit a road block with your story?
Knock on wood, I’ve never had true,
paralyzing writer’s block. But I’ve definitely written myself into corners, or
stumbled upon a huge plot hole, and those moments can be brutal. The only way I
know how to get beyond roadblocks is to walk away for a few days. A huge part
of my writing process is the crafting I do in my mind. I need to let my brain
have some downtown and when I do I am never disappointed with the results.
Was writing your first love? What else did
you want to be, or do you have another profession?
When I was five I wanted to be a
singing dentist and marry a Boston Celtic. At least that’s what my parents tell
me. But it wasn’t long after that, that I started writing stories about my
toys. I’d ask my mom questions to work out the storylines and she’d look at me
like I was insane, but she gets it now. I really wanted to write soap operas,
but I never pursued it. Sometimes I still think about it, but for now I’ll
stick to novels.
I also wanted to teach, but sometimes I
wonder if that dream came out of everyone telling me that writing wasn’t a real
profession. I actually did teach and worked as a children’s librarian for a while.
I loved those jobs. And I miss my kiddos every day. But writing is what
sustains me so that’s what I do full time now.
Where would your ideal reading / writing
spot be?
I try to write at my desk because that
makes me focus, but I have neck and shoulder issues so I bounce back and forth
between my desk and one of the many couches around here. I’m not one to write
in coffee shops or out in the world. I’m too easily distracted that way. People
are way too fascinating and I find myself people watching instead of working.
Okay here are some random questions.
Tea, coffee, espresso, rum?
I love tea. I drink a cup of green
tea in the morning and then iced tea all day long.
Favourite holiday?
HALLOWEEN. I love scaring neighborhood
children. My house is terrifying and always decorated. I actually have a real,
handmade coffin for my front yard. It’s awesome. I wear a costume every year
and I watch the movie, Halloween. It’s my favorite tradition. Last year I was Bellaxtrix LeStrange. My
favorite costume ever is Wednesday Addams. Not sure who/what I’m going to be
this year. I’m still kicking around a few ideas.
Do you like scary movies?
Yes. But I won’t see them in the
theater. I like scary movies, but I’m also a big chicken, and being in a
theater makes me susceptible to other’s reactions. I prefer to be scared, by
myself, in my own home. With all the lights on. Honestly, I don’t know why I
watch them. I’m almost guaranteed to have a nightmare afterward, but that
hasn’t stopped me yet.
What's your most craziest experience with
wiring?
In high school I used to trade essays
for math homework. Does that count?
Do you fangirl?
Like an idiot. Judy Blume tweeted at
me once. I may have ran around my house screaming.
Do you like Sailor Moon?
I don’t know what that is! Agh!
You see a spider, what do you do?
It depends on the size. I live in an
area that has SPIDER SEASON. If it’s smaller than a quarter, I deal with it,
and by that I mean squish it in a tissue and flush it. If it’s a wolf spider, I
call for my husband. Have you seen those? (shudder) If I get bit by a spider I hope to wake as spider woman.
Last question..
If you could do it all over again, would
you still be a writer?
Absolutely. If I weren’t a writer I
would be a crazy person with lots of voices in my head. =)
